U.S. Forest and Wood Products Sector Meeting Examines Workforce Needs and Connects with Markets Matter Convening
The U.S. Forest and Wood Products Sector Inclusion Council gathered in Madison, Wisconsin, this May to discuss workforce development, inclusion, and engagement across the forestry and natural resources sector. Members reviewed preliminary findings from the FW2030 workforce needs assessment, shared updates on ongoing working group initiatives, and explored ways to strengthen connections between education and employment. Discussions also highlighted efforts to support youth engagement through tools like the Workforce Pathways StoryMap and improve access to resources for students, educators, Tribal communities, and other underrepresented groups.
Members also received updates on the Forests250 initiative, which celebrates the role forests have played in shaping America’s history, communities, and future over the past 250 years. The initiative continues to engage new audiences through events, partnerships, and educational outreach, helping more people discover the impact of forests and forest products. The meeting concluded with working group updates and next steps to support a strong, connected, and inclusive forestry workforce.
The Inclusion Council meeting preceded the Markets Matter convening, intended to advance durable, scalable markets for wood fiber across both forestry residues and manufacturing residuals. Members discussed the workforce challenges and opportunities associated with market development and how to ensure that the forestry workforce is poised to meet the workforce needs of the future.
